Religious Study & Curriculum

Philosophy of our Religious School

The Temple Adath B’nai Israel Religious School seeks to provide a Religious education that is: age appropriate, engaging, informative, creative, and identity building for students pre-k through Confirmation.  Because God, Torah, and Israel are major tenets of Judaism, these core concepts are the foundation of our school curriculum.  The enduring understandings we seek to foster are a sense of God, a love of Torah, and a connection with the people and land of Israel.  Our students experience Judaism through holiday celebrations, performing mitzvot (commandments/ethical living), participating in Shabbat worship, and g’milut chasadim (acts of loving kindness).  Active participation in Jewish learning is a pathway to building community, enriching spirituality, sustaining Jewish continuity and tikun olam (repairing the world).

Preschool - 12th grade

Religious Education and Hebrew School are available to children of families who are congregational members.

Religious School is in session Sundays through the school year. There are approximately 40 children attending the school in kindergarten through ninth grade.

All holidays and festivals are celebrated and studied.  We  hope the children will learn to take pride in their heritage. The success of our religious school depends on the commitment of  our teachers, students and parents.

Hebrew School is also on Sundays.  Children entering the 4th grade from families who are congregational members are eligible.  Any questions should be directed to Rabbi Bar-Yaacov

Adult Education

It's never too late to begin learning.  Adult Education has been going through the Book of Braishit, Genesis, and reading the text closely, to see what is in it and what is midrash, and what we Jews have drawn out from the text - ethics, morals and how the narratives "work".  Our adult education begins at 1:00 pm on Shabbat (Saturday).

We have begun our "First Monday of the Month" study group.  This group looks at the way our siddur, prayer book, is laid out and why prayers are in the order tat they are in.  We have been studying the meaning of the prayers and their importance.  Please join us and bring your topic suggestions to be studied.

We also have 3 levels of Hebrew classes:

bulletBeginners Hebrew - Mondays at 5:30 pm.  No knowledge of Hebrew is assumed.
bulletIntermediate Hebrew - Tuesdays at 5:30 pm.  Knowledge of the alef-bet is assumed.  We study from Mishkan Tfilla.
bulletAdvanced Hebrew - Thursdays at 5:30 pm.  Ability to read and to understand some Hebrew is required.  We study from the Tanach.

If none of these times works for you, and you wish to learn Hebrew, at whatever level, please contact the Rabbi.

We also have special programs and guest speakers at the Temple made possible in part by funding through the Bronstein Foundation. Information about such programs are found in the Events Calendar.

If you are interested in participating in Adult Education or would like to have a specific topic brought up in Adult Education,  you may call Rabbi Bar-Yaacov.
