We know that the basis of who we are is the Torah. The Torah is the beginning of our history, first as a family and then as a People. The Torah is also our constitution. In it we have the rules and regulations, called mitzvot--commandments, required of us. We are addressed as a People; the commandments are to the entire House of Israel, the Jewish People. Whenever the individual is addressed, it is the individual within the People, not the individual qua individual. We are required to bring about a certain type of society that has not yet existed as human society--not just for a few but for everyone living within the borders of the Land of Israel, whether Jew or non-Jew.
